The Basilian abbey of San Nicola di Casole, located by the coast, less than a mile from the city centre, was an important students’ house. It included the biggest library in Southern Italy and a purpose-built scriptorium where monks used to copy the works by Greek and Latin classical authors, protecting this invaluable heritage.
